Places of Interest

Hoochery Rum Distillery
The Hoochery stands proud at being a 100% Australian owned and operated family business and wherever possible using locally grown ingredients. Ord River Rum is made from local sugar cane, Wet Season rainwater and yeast that is all vat fermented, pot distilled, aged in Oak barrels and hand bottled. We age our Rum in 300 liter Oak barrels which naturally colours and flavours our Rum, resulting in a very smooth tropical flavour with an oaky finish. The Hoochery’s showroom is a traditional old country style saloon bar complete with old piano and chandeliers, decorated with artefacts dating well back. It is here you can view the barreling room, talk to the distillers, take a guided tour and view the actual production of Hoochery products. You can also taste test the products including the famous homemade “Ord River Rum Cake”,
Mirima National Park
Mirima National Park is just two kilometres (a drive of less than five minutes) east of Kununurra. A culturally significant place for the local Miriwoong people. For thousands of years the natural features of Mirima have attracted the local Aboriginal people. The rock formations provide shelter, rock holes provide permanent water and plants and animals are used for food, tools and medicine. Cultural ceremonies continue to be performed at special sites within the park.
Four walk trails include:
The Class 3, 2.2km return Gerliwany-gerring Banan Trail.
The Class 4, 800m return Derdbe-gerring Banan Trail climbs to points overlooking Kununurra and intricate rock formations.
The Class 2, 400m Looking at Plants Trail is a loop that includes a wheelchair friendly boardwalk.
The Class 3, 500m return Demboong Banan Trail leads through a gap in the sandstone range to a lookout over Kununurra.
Ivanhoe Crossing
This iconic concrete causeway was built over the mighty Ord River and remains in flow year round. The crossing is a great place to cast a line in search of the elusive barramundi, or to enjoy sunset across the river. Depending on road openings, it may be possible to drive over the crossing, however it is important to bear in mind that the crossing itself is wide, and the current from the river very strong. Road access to the opposite side of the crossing is also possible via the Victoria Highway.
Estuarine crocodiles can be seen at Ivanhoe Crossing, so the area is not safe for swimming. Please pay attention to the safety signage at the crossing itself.
Celebrity Tree Park
Check out the celebrities who’ve visited the East Kimberley hub of Kununurra at Celebrity Tree Park. Since the park opened in 1984, a number of celebrities have visited the town! Stars including John Farnham, Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, Baz Luhrmann, Rolf Harris, Governor Generals and many others. Each celebrity has planted a tree which is identified by a plaque.
Celebrity Tree Park sits in a tranquil spot by the banks of the Ord River’s Lily Creek Lagoon and makes an idyllic picnic spot.
Swim Beach
Swim Beach is a tranquil, crocodile controlled, swimming beach located just outside of Kununurra with changing facilities, toilets, showers and a BBQ. Makes a perfect spot for a BBQ lunch with friends on a hot Kimberley day
Kelly's Knob
A trip to Kelly's Knob is a MUST! Sunrise and sunset are the most spectacular times to visit the lookout. Located just 1km from the town, access is via a sealed road which leads to a short path with steps with handrails to viewing points. From this point it is also possible to walk further along a steep path to the very top of Kelly’s Knob for more expansive views – this walk takes approximately 20 minutes each way and can be challenging for some people.
Lake Argyle
Lake Argyle is approximately 18 times the size of Sydney harbour and plays a pivotal role in the irrigation of the lands in and around Kununurra. Located approximately 75kms South of Kununurra, it is a fantastic option for tourists and locals alike - whether you want to relax by the infinity pool, take a cruise, or participate in some wake-boarding, the lake offers it all, with some of the most dramatic scenery in Australia!
El Questro
El Questro is a destination unlike any other and offers the freedom to explore one of Australia’s last true frontiers. From deep gorges and majestic mountains to thermal springs, mud and salt-flats, rainforests and cascading waterfalls everything the Kimberley has to offer is located across the property's 700,000 acres. Whether you choose to explore the area by air, land, horse or water you’ll never be far from an abundance of natural, and ancient, flora and fauna. Hike through ancient gorges to waterfalls that await you at the end. Fish for barramundi in locations accessible by helicopter only. Explore the vast landscape on horseback or soak up the sunrise while bird watching at dawn. Tucked away in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia the most direct way to get here is via Kununurra. From here we are just 110 kilometres west on mostly sealed roads:

Home Valley Station
Experience the exhilaration of barramundi fishing, soak in the unforgettable scenery of the East Kimberley and be inspired by the region's Indigenous people. It is both a working cattle station and a premium tourism operation, providing guests with the ultimate Australian outback experience. The property has excellent accommodation with two swimming pools and Dusty Bar & Grill, which provides live local entertainment. Guest can enjoy a range of activities including Cattle Musters, Horse Riding, Natural waterhole swimming, Barramundi Fishing, Boating, Ancient Gorge Walks, Bush Walking and Indigenous Cultural Tours.
